BALANCE THE GRIND
Dayna's review of Grumpy Bums' Banana & Muesli Cookie Mix highlights a delightful, healthy baking adventure with her daughter, creating delicious treats that are kid-approved and parent-friendly.
Grumpy Bums was founded by food scientist (and mum) Jo Leontiades. Jo knows the challenges parents face with giving their kids treats so she set out to create a range of delicious treats for kids with real ingredients, sweet enough to satisfy any little sugar monster but without the added sugar and nasties.

WHAT SHE JUST SAID
Grumpy Bums, a new line of bake-at-home products devoid of added sugar, sweeteners, and refined sugars, came about as a response to concerning statistics about Australian packaged foods. A significant portion of these products currently on the market – approximately two-thirds – contain added sugar. So what does this mean? In a nutshell, 60 per cent of Aussie kids aged 2-8 exceed the recommended ‘free sugar’ intake. ‘Free sugar’ refers to sugar incorporated into food or drinks, including the natural sugars found in honey, syrup, and fruit juice. The term ‘free’ is used because these sugars are not contained within the cells of the consumed food.

Following the birth of her son, food scientist Jo Leontiades was inspired to create Grumpy Bums, a range of easy, bake-at-home products without added sugar, sweeteners or refined sugars – incorporating real ingredients and the natural sweetness of fruit.
As a parent, Jo saw a gap in the health food market for mums and dads seeking wholesome, no-sugar foods to fulfil their childrens’ breakfast, snacking and lunchbox needs, while also catering to a range of dietary restrictions.

The birth of her son prompted food scientist, Jo Leontiades, to develop healthy no-sugar foods for kids that also catered to a range of dietary restrictions.
Grumpy Bums is a range of easy, bake-at-home products without added sugar, sweeteners, or refined sugars but incorporate real ingredients and the natural sweetness of fruit.
“As a first-time mum, I immediately identified with the issue many parents face when giving their kids snacks, namely sugar,” Leontiades said.
“Many products that claim to have ‘no sugar’ are overly processed and often contain sweeteners, sugar substitutes or refined sugars.
“But it’s my belief that kids don’t need to be denied sweet treats, so I started baking products for my son, with no sugar and no additives and he really enjoyed them.
“This was the inspiration for Grumpy Bums – a way to give parents healthy snacking options that satisfy snack cravings, without the added sugar,” she said.
